Volunteer Opportunities

For Knitters, Crocheters, Fleecers & Quilters

If you enjoy creating blankets, caps or similar "comfort" items for children and adults who are ill or needy, please join us. (See below for a description of Projects.)

All blankies, caps, etc. wil be donated - to hospitals, shelters and similar charitable organizations.

Please note that all projects must be 100% machine washable. See Patterns & Links for ideas. Please contact us to obtain labels and materials (yarn, quilting fabric, fleece).

Materials

If you do not have time to start another project, please consider donating materials - yarn, cotten fabric or fleece. For materials donations and drop-off/delivery information please e-mail: helaine@bobsblankiebrigade.org or go to Contact Us.

Financial Support

Financial support is also needed. We are a 501(c)(3) public charity and contributions are deductible under Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. All contributions are welcome. Please make donations by checks payable to "Bob's Blankie Brigade, Inc." and send to us by snail mail to:

Projects - Volunteers Needed!

Blankies for Children and Families in Hospitals

Being in a hospital can be particularly "scary" even for adults. Worse still, medical treatments can have unpleasant side effects. Chemotherapy also makes cancer patients feel cold "from the inside" out. Blankies can help warm the body and spirit.

Our on-going project is to make and collect blankies for children undergoing cancer treatments and for children and adults in need.

Our needs are as follows:

For children - blankets should be at least 32" square from any machine washable yarn or fabric.
Lap size blankies can also be useful. They should be at least 30"x40" also from machine washable materials. Largers sizes are also welcome.

University Medical Center has also requested caps for their preemies and nursery patients. We are looking into making chemo caps as well.

Domestic Violence Blankie Project

Domestic violence is on the rise again in these hard economic times. This affects children and families as well as the battered spouse. Blankies are needed for children and adults in shelters and temporary housing. One volunteer told us that the children and adults are touched to know that someone thought of them and took the time to make a blankie.

We are working with Womanspace, Inc. located in NJ. Womanspace provides services to individuals and families impacted by domestic and sexual violence, including emergency shelter and housing services. (See www.womanspace.org for more info.) We would like to donate larger size blankies (lap size about 45" x 60") for use in the emergency shelter and temporary housing.

We will make blankies available to other organizations serving this need. Anyone interested in this project should contact Helaine@bobsblankiebrigade.org.
